A day in the life and home of a child in an informal settlement
The rooster crowed loudly at five o' clock in the morning. I was tired, cold and wished I lived in a better environment. There was no light so it was hard to see. I took my clothes of the line they were still wet but it was better than nothing. I went to fetch a bucket of water so I could bath. There wasn't much water but I made the best of it. There was just a little bit of soap that I could use but I wanted to save some for my mom. I got dressed into my damp clothes and went to make breakfast. There wasn't much to eat so I just had two slices of dry bread and a glass of orange juice. The dry bread was a bit moldy but I was so hungry I ate it.
Before I left I needed to use the bathroom, so I went to use the community toilet. It smelt horrible because we had no water to flush it down. No one had cleaned out any of them so that was why. I needed to use it badly so I just bared with the smell. As I walked to school I started to think about the changes in the environment can make life better. It would be better if the community started working together and stop waiting for the government to do something. It would also be better if we had running water, working electricity and proper bathrooms.
I finally got to school were I saw my teacher and 40 other children quietly talking waiting for all 60 children to arrive I sat down next to my friends and started talking to them. Soon everyone arrived and my teacher started writing maths sums on the board. Soon school was over and I went back home. It started to get cold so I hurried back. I finally got home, it was dark and I was tired. I was so tired I didn't even eat. I brushed my teeth and went to bed.
A well written piece. Thank you Mia. Some lovely images. Well done.
